INNER CLASSIC OF THE YELLOW EMPEROR, HUANGDI NEIJING 黄帝内經

The Inner Classic of the Yellow Emperor may be considered the most important and best-known text of ancient Chinese medical theory. The text is divided into two major sections—the “Plain Questions” (Suwen) and the “Numinous Pivot” (Lingshu)—each being a compilation of thematically ordered theories from various medical traditions or lineages. Scholars usually date the earliest version of the compilation as being created between the 1st century BCE and the 1st century CE.

The work contains dialogues between the Yellow Emperor and various ministers. These conversations are concerned with cosmology, medical diagnosis, lifestyle, and therapeutic techniques. The “Plain Questions” discusses natural and biological processes in terms of the Five Phases physics (wuxing). The “Numinous Pivot” provides details on such therapies as acupuncture and moxibustion. There are other books that are known to have had Huangdi neijing as a prefix to their titles. Some are no longer extant.
